A really unique experience.
Of the 20 monasteries located on the Holy Mountain, the brethren of 17 are predominantly ethnically Greek. Of the other 3, there is the Helandariou Monastery (Serbian), the Zografou Monastery (Bulgarian) and the Agiou Panteleimonos Monastery (Russian). Since the beginning of Mount Athos' history, monks have been living in lodgings of different size and construction quality. All these monastic lodging types exist until today, named as kathismata, cells, huts, retreats, hermitages, caves, skites and all of them are known under the general term "dependencies" of the Monasteries.
Also there is the option of a private tour around Mount Athos. You can contact us about it.

Byzantine tower of Ouranoupoli & ancient Ouranoupoli Museum.
It was built in the 14th century -apparently before 1344- by monks of the Vatopedi Abbey in Mount Athos, to protect the area from enemy invasions. It is situated next to the small harbor of Ouranoupolis. This tower is part of a small fortified complex and serves as a base for the whole Mount Athos peninsula.
Among the most remarkable features of this construction, we can mention the diversity of its origins, since the bottom part, which bears the structure of the tower, belongs to the Byzantine period, while the last two floors -and apparently some other parts that didn't survive- date from the Turkish occupation that occured after 1585. Regarding the interior of the tower, it is made of wood and it dates from the 19th century. It also has two wooden balconies. Also, this Byzantine tower is also important in historical terms because since 1928, it constituted the home of the Loch couple, who supported the refugees of that time and created the current tradition in hand made carpets.
On the other hand, this tower is the biggest and the best maintained tower in Halkidiki, despite hit by an earthquake in the 19th century that destroyed the top floor. This requested a lot of repairs, after which it took its current form. The surrounding buildings were built during the same period, one of which hosts the local municipal office.
Zugou Monastery
It is an old Athonite monastery that was founded in the early 10th century and was destroyed just before 1198. It is located approximately 2km east of Ouranoupoli, just outside the limits of Mount Athos, in a position known as Fragokastro (just 40m outside the borders of Mount Athos).
According to data, it seems to be one of the oldest monastic institutions on the Athonite peninsula.
In the excavation site visitors will admire the castle, the towers and mainly the Catholicon of the monastery which is being excavated. The castle consists of five construction phases, all older than 1211. The surface inside the walls is 5,5 acres and the walls had 11 towers –some of which are being restored.
